DYSPHAgIA

Dysphagia relates to swallowing of food, liquid and saliva. Swallowing and food/liquid related difficulty can occur across the population, from newborns to the elderly. Swallowing safely is vital to avoid choking and aspiration. Adults may find they struggle to swallow medication, food or liquids or they may cough or choke after swallowing. Children may be fussy eaters or choke or gag on particular foods or liquids, indicating some intervention may be required for safe consumption of liquids and solids.

Our speech pathology team can assess swallowing using a variety of textured foods and liquids and discuss any concerns you may have about your or your child’s swallowing. Our team can suggest modifications to food to make it easier to swallow or suggest evidence-based swallowing strategies to promote safe swallowing.
