AAC stands for alternative and augmentative communication. This means communicating in other ways than just talking. AAC empowers people to continue to communicate if their voice, speech or language quality has lessened or if they are non-verbal. AAC can be classified as high tech or low tech.
Low tech AAC items not electronic. These can include pictures, pointing to items, drawing objects and communication boards.
High tech AAC includes items which are electronic. This can include apps on iPads, eye gaze systems and speech generating devices.
Our speech pathology team can work in collaboration with you to determine what AAC is the best for you and your needs. We can support you through trials if required and address any concerns you may have.
